Quarter

1964 Washington Quarter-Lot F. 5 out of 5 stars. 1964 Washington Quarter. The Washington Quarter was first minted in the early 1930s, and has remained in circulation ever since. Of course, the biggest different between coins minted between 1932 and 1964 and coins minted nowadays is the fact that the former contains a good bit of silver, increasing its inherent value. For collectors, the silver content is not nearly as important as these coins’ historical significance. 1964 was the last year for the 90% silver/ 10% copper Washington quarters. Even though this is the last year silver Washington quarters were struck, over 1.16 billion Washington quarters were struck. This was done to eliminate silver blanks being held since all silver coinage (dime, quarter, half-dollar, dollar coin) were to be switched to the new copper/nickel clad composition in 1965.

Value

These coins don't have much numismatic value because so many of them were minted. In fact you can still find some in circulation- it's rare but not impossible to find one of these coins in your change. This applies to both the 1964 quarters with no mint mark and the 1964 D quarters.

These coins in circulated condition are worth at least their weight in silver. The silver melt value per coin is $4.92 as of February 09, 2021. This melt value is calculated from the current silver spot price of $27.22 per ounce.

Both the 1964 quarters with no mint mark and the 1964 D quarters are worth around $5 each in extremely fine condition. In uncirculated condition the value is around $8 for coins with an MS 60 grade. Uncirculated coins with a grade of MS 65 can sell for around $15.

Proof coins with no mint mark are available and they are valued at around $11 in PR 65 condition. The United States Mint sold 3,950,762 proof sets, which was a record number at the time. There was high demand because this was the last of the older proof sets that were minted from 1950-1964.
